Of course we talk about deeds on the verge of legality because combatants are supposed to wear uniforms, but given the fact that pilot was engaged in fulfilling illegal orders to attack civilians repeatedly, we may agree that this is somehow acceptable. If he would be killed by a car bomb along with his wife and kids, we would probably condemn it.
I didn't see any qualms about the fact they sent people over the kill Reinhard Heydrich on his drive to work. Both were involved in the murder of innocents, all be it one on a larger scale.
