He is the enemy but isn't there a code of conduct in war we should respect else slip down a slope of barbaric behaviour?

The pilot is complicit in a criminal enterprise, by the definition that emanates from the mouth of Putin, Lavrov, Peskov, and the rest of the gang. They elect to murder civilians in a country that has the abject misfortune to have been located adjacent to the crime gang. Every party given criminal orders has the obligation not to follow such orders. They did not object, they follow dutifully their crime bosses orders. Ukraine has legal right under the UN Charter to defend itself from the crimes of Putin.
Still searching for basis of sympathy, not findng a reason.
Russia can stop wasting their citizens lives from the apathy that gives Putin his power, Ukraine has no such option.
