The whole "surely you want to fly jets" thing was widespread when I joined, but largely disappeared during Afghanistan, with (according to some EFT QFI friends) more folks wanting rotary than jet.
At the height of Afghanistan in about 2009/2010 I visited Odiham, and was told by the then Chinook Force Commander, Gp Capt Turner, that
80% of student pilots at Cranwell were requesting the Chinook.
