I lived in North London for many years and at times near Brent Cross. Getting to LGW or STN was always the last options to be considered. Trekking across London by public transport or in a car, was / is to be avoided.

Thamelink running north to south is the equivalent of the Elizabeth Line running east to west so I don’t know why it was the last option unless you predate the through London services that are now operated.
