In my experience it is a fairly simple statement in the Ops Manual to the effect that "the navigation database that is current at the commencement of the flight shall be used; the database must not be changed during flight".
Comparing to paper is not that easy nowadays with EFB's in widespread use. Even when there were paper charts it was not a quick or simple process.
