Was a lesson taught to us in the USN mid 60's, no nylon or metal watch straps, had leather flying jackets, cotton flying suits that were recommended to be put through the base laundry for washing and fire retardant treatment. US military were big on fire protection at the time, promoted in a big way by a USAF pilot who had run off the end in a T-33 and suffered severe burns. The introduction of Nomex, developed by Dupont for the US Navy in the early 60's and introduced into service about 1967, was a measure of the concern of protecting from fire, sad to see USN fighter guys flying with sleeves rolled up these days.
