It’s done all around the world because they don’t have any other choice. There’s plenty of experience to choose from at the moment with mainline applicants, why the hell would they not take that?

It's pretty simple. Recruit into mainline and hold people back for a few years if you need to but, give them a number on the seniority list. Then they don't feel like they are being screwed when all the externals jump them. Having airlines like Jetstar not treating employees with absolute contempt and basic quality of life improvements wouldn't hurt either.
You’d need to change the Longhaul EBA as to how seniority numbers are allocated before random numbers were handed out to people who haven’t started. How can they do it when they’re not on an actual course?
