Had the AoA subsystem been identified as unacceptably producing the incorrect information 30+ years ago MCAS would have not been the discussion point it is today. But everyone thought that passing along false data and even creating false stall warnings was OK. Every pundit has said that the cacophony from the false stall warning distracted the pilots from noticing the MCAS activity - however if the false AoA data was properly identified then that data would have been marked invalid and not passed to MCAS to work with.
