Nordic Air Force

The heads of the air forces of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland have signed a declaration to create a joint air force, the military commands of the four Nordic countries said on Friday. These countries will have about 250 modern fighters.

The Nordic Air Commanders Intent document was signed at the US base in Ramstein, Germany, last week in the presence of NATO command. The integration of the Nordic Air Force will include command, operational planning, airspace surveillance, logistics, including the use of airports, training and exercises.

The first joint operation of the air forces of four countries is to be presented in the winter of 2024 during NATO's Cold Response maneuvers in Scandinavia.

"The ultimate goal is to create a single force by developing a Nordic concept of joint air operations based on NATO's methodology," it said.

According to the head of the Norwegian Air Force, General Rolf Folland, "the Nordic Air Force will be a powerful force that will act as a deterrent." "Of course, we see that Russia has the will and ability to use military force against its neighbors," Folland said.

According to Per Erik Solli, a defence expert at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), the Nordic warplanes will have sufficient range "to be able to flexibly defend both the region and neighboring sea areas against air attacks."

The expert reminded that the Nordic countries are modernizing their air forces. Denmark purchased 27 modern F-35 fighter jets, Finland 64 and Norway 52. "A total of 143 fifth-generation aircraft in the Nordic countries is a significant force by European standards," Solli said.

In addition, as he reminded, Sweden will introduce 60 new Gripen E aircraft into service, retaining 60 modernized Gripen C/D aircraft.
