Usually the most expensive way to and from a London airport is to catch the express service but for Luton, if booked in advance, the Luton Express service is actually the cheapest with journeys from the airport to St Pancras costing as little as £7.60 including the £4.90 ride on the Dart.
By having to use a particular train makes this ticket option unviable for many passengers, as the great unknown is what time will the passenger leave the aircraft and how long will it take to pass through the airport?
Anyway, after 5 years of construction instead of 3 and a final bill that will probably come close to around £300m, will it make any money or even pay for itself? According to some councillors it has cost the people of Luton nothing, which would be nice seeing they will never use it. In reality it has been built with borrowed money that the Council is liable for and that needs to be paid back. The council dividend from the airport is no more with the auditors writing down the project by £184m based on a then price of £263m.
No doubt in the future, the world of the Dart will be hidden in secret Council reports and that within 10 years it will be sold off at a massive loss.
