1951 Avianca Transatlantic Route
As an 8 tear old child, in the summer of 1951, I flew with my family from Quito, Ecuador to Rome, Italy on the route Quito Cali Bogota (on Avianca DC-3,) Bogota Barranquilla on Avianca DC-3 but could have been a DC-4 and the Barranquilla - Bermuda - Azores - Lisbon - Rome on a DC-4
We overnighted in Lisbon at the Hotel El Estoril and then proceeded to Rome.
I was invited as a child to join the crews in the cockpit. A kind navigator showed me the oscilloscope Loran screen. I remember distinctly the smell of hot vacuum tube electronics as well as the whir of the rotating DC to AC or perhaps AC to AC converters.
I had always been interested in aviation. Got a degree in Aerospace Engineering from Cornell and a Ph.D. in from Princeton.
Have been dealing with nuclear matters since.
Perhaps will look on e-bay for a schedule fir that flight. Any of the crew on that flight by now would be at least 100 years old.
