It surprisingly works - if you're bored it's great to try. Over land at typical helicopter altitudes it might not be possible to discern from ground clutter, but out over the water I've had a crossing (at 90°) S-92 return (1000' below, perhaps 7-8nm away) make it's way across the radar display before - the greater cross section likely helped. We couldn't believe it at first, but it was backed up by a lone TCAS diamond in the vicinity of the radar return, as well as us eventually visually identifying the aircraft outside.
