Having worked in the wonderful magical world of SigInt, I can tell you that you'd be surprised what can be detected and from how far away.
As a Vet Scaley (Royal Corps of Signals to the uninitiated), we were always surprised at what our colleagues in EW could detect even though we'd reduce Tx power to the absolute minimum and ensure that our AE were as low as we could get away with and pointing directly at each other. It is quite embarrassing to discover that you can quite easily use a back or side lobe to transmit a considerable distance (by accident of course).
