The need to change to the left seat could be a consequence of the use of the visual docking guidance system at the gate L23 the pilot said he would go to.
Some of those guidance systems require the pilot using it to be in the left seat; using it from the right-hand seat will bring the fuselage closer and possibly too close to the fixed structures of the gate.

Waiting for a marshaller might be an alternative, but a response to that request could also take some time, and might still be tricky to perform flawlessly at short notice while the area at the gate might not yet be fully prepared. So planning to use the left seat might be a wise choice.
