That is correct. And that is also where our colleagues do unfortunately come up with all sorts of creative solutions.
To recap for the OP: LIFUS is PIC regardless of the title you are holding and nothing else. For an initial line check after LIFUS you are still PIC. Depending on airlines/authorities you may have to seat in the front or might seat on the
JS with a qualified FO/CPT in the front.
For annual line checks you are on the
JS and not PIC but as well not copilot, so this is where it becomes a grey area.
