Does anyone know the drill in the event of a power failure when racing?

I have looked quite closely at the first few frames of the crash video and the crash aircraft is suddenly overtaken, bank increases a bit, descends a fraction, then bank increases and he climbs and the line tightens considerably. This is 0-4 seconds in the video. When the camera shot widens at about 5s he must be well inside the course and is in a steep bank (relative to other racers).

The race is surely lost by that point.

Could he have been trading speed for altitude after an engine failure and pulled in and up to clear traffic and at that time lost consciousness?
