Be first job ready. First Aid certificate, Dangerous Goods credits, as current as you can be, drivers' licence etc. Computing skills. You name it.
Having barista training and/or restaurant sous-chef (or at least being able to cook up a far-better-than-average feed for a hungry crowd from whatever is available locally) can not only help pay the bills whilst your looking - but being able to hand the boss a good coffee first thing in the morning in the middle of absolutely nowhere will go a long way to a place in the cockpit!
