Maybe someone will correct me but hasn’t it always been like that just at much lower levels of activity? I recall 25-30 years ago it was just a few easyJet, Debonair and Monarch with a smattering of Britannia and Ryanair.
The difference then was that the airport had the capacity to accept a decent amount of ad-hocs, charters for sporting events and diversions etc. Plus there was always a variety of cargo aircraft parked on the hangar line together with many interesting aircraft visiting Monarch for attention. I started work airside in 1986 and my camera was always busy (but these days on the airliner front it could almost be retired!)
