Nutloose, my understanding is that if the weapon has a bayonet lug than a blank firing adapter can be installed. The BFA isn't needed to fire blanks it only lets people around you know that your firing blanks and the ones I have and use are bright yellow

Its a visual indication to other trainees that blanks are being used.
As Nutty says, it retains backpressure to activate the gas-operated reloading/cocking system.
A blank cartridge does not fire a projectile, but it does fire debris and combustion gasses which can cause injury; the BFA limits the extent and velocity of the exhausted material.
