Meleaggertoo I was looking for advice and posted here in the hopes maybe someone could help, I assumed the replies would be friendly, helpful and courteous and from those in the know , who may be able to help a novice like myself. I guess friendly, helpful and courteous is missing in the professional pilots group.
Reco, don't be disheartened. For a lot of rotary people, all those years of waiting for a loose bolt, or a missing washer, or a sudden change in vibration to result in a fiery demise with the mandatory smoking hole in the ground makes them quite cynical and suspicious. Very few of them remember the exuberance of youth and the excitement of being around aviation, so you'll have to forgive them. Usually, someone will eventually answer your question, but you have to be ready to deal with the banter before you get there. I would take SASless' advice and stick an ADF in there, as well as providing "entertainment", it's a useful Nav aid without getting into any of that scary IFR stuff.

Also just a reminder about social media sites in general - you will rarely know who you are dealing with! That adds to the cynicism and mistrust. People often disregard all all social norms and politeness when hacking away on the keyboard, it's just a fact. Internet inspired bravado is a real condition!

P.S. I found Eviltwin's mother to be quite charming.
