Bomb casing and remanents of nuclear material could hardly account for the given numbers !

Both bombs exploded 1 500' - 2 000' AGL - this counts as a groundblast per Ninthace's link. and would blast/suck up huge amounts of dirt/anything from the ground which immediately becomes irradiated "fall-out" Air-burst means below 100 000' down to a level at which the blast does not hit the ground.
