I was interested to hear former UK DCDS(Ops) Lt-Gen (rtd) Sir Simon Mayall's opinion on BBC Radio 4's Today programme say that although the Russian badly mishandled the invasion tactically at first, time is on Putin's side, and his strategy to take control of the productive parts of Ukraine is coming together.

Regarding a definition of Genocide:
Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide
Article I
The Contracting Parties confirm that genocide, whether committed in time of peace or in time of war, is a crime under international law which they undertake to prevent and to punish.
Article II
In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Personally I think Putin's actions include a, b and c in respect of the Ukrainian national group - but I won't be a prosecutor or judge. He wants to eliminate the idea of a Ukrainian nation and make it part of the Russian one. I don't think he recognizes its existence and considers the language as a Russian dialect.
