My comment about gliders not being visible to radar were based on flying around Farnborough under an RIS this summer; I reported some gliders which they did not appear to see (say 2500ft amsl). I don't think they can see baloons too well either (but one would not normally fly into one of those

) I always use Mode C.

Can you elaborate? I know for a fact that many people fly with Mode C switched off intentionally. Could be because they were trained that way (there are a lot of old attitudes going around in GA) or perhaps some do it because they can fly higher without busting CAS...
