Good result in my view. I am totally behind Qantas on this. Airlines and companies are NOT democracies. It amounts to "We pay you a wage and provide you training and a safe workplace if you abide by the conditions we set."
What astounds me is it is no different to someone welcoming a friend to their place for dinner or to clean their house for which they are paid and saying "By the way, while you're here we do not smoke so please do not smoke while you work". Totally reasonable, but all of a sudden it is the big ogre Qantas denying people their 'freedom of choice'.
Newsflash - if you go and work for Gina Reinhardt, the arch capitalist, you don't get to work unless you wear the safety gear they insist on. I don't like her personally but good on her, it's her premises and she has responsibilities to ALL who enter the premises so, so be it.
For some reason "Qantas" and "32 Years Service" are supposed to provide exemptions to the rules. My father worked for more than 32 years for Qantas and he's had both doses of AZ, for him it was a no brainer, if he'd been at QF still he would have done the same, it doesn't mean he didn't stand up against unjust things in his career - difference is, he never was, and still isn't, in his late eighties, mesmerized by some fictitious deity that commands his every move.
