The airlift planners would have had the requirement in mind from the start, and anyway the supply of evacuees dried up in the last couple of days. Also, there are major military airbases in Pakistan well within unrefuelled range for both types. Neither option is remotely outlandish, so I'm not sure why you seem surprised?
