I needed an FAA ATP for a job in Saudi Arabia. I did a swing-by California on the way and did a few hours training at a flight school in Los Angeles and then the flight test. It is relatively easy to do if your starting point is an ICAO ATP and you meet the certificate experience requirements (particularly 100 hours night). The hardest part was comprehending ATC in high traffic airspace, they talk real fast on the radio!
