Did they have escorts ?
The Alaska pilots that used to fly around the Bears for fun , got a shock when the old planes had new escorts . Round about the same time as the Bear got some new missiles . Old threats become new again . The logistics of getting Mig escorts all the way to Hawaii would be a challenge .
I would expect to see drone fighter escorts as the next logical step . With or without AI .
