This argument that people should have to go outside their paid job to earn honours is, ahem, bollocks. You’ve recognised that yourself in the last line: doctors and nurses are doing their paid job. Unfortunately it is a line of thought that has traction in some parts of the military, and that’s why we have some people who are interested in everything except their primary duties.
