2. Diesel Electric propulsion us pretty much standard these days - for major warships anyway. See this booklet from Rolls Royce about
powering the Queen Elizabeth class carriers.

Britannia was not sent South in 1982, the explanation being that she would have needed Furnace Fuel Oil and not Diesel. I expect her boilers were later converted. However, she was intended to have a Home Defence tole post nuclear strike.
