As an aside; My late Father once had the opportunity to fly a then fresh from the Castle Bromwich factory Mk IX Spitfire, (had less than 30 hrs on the airframe) and he knocked it back, fearing at the time that he couldn't handle it!
Kicked himself for the rest of his life!!
