I had to get written permission from my Stn Cdr to live out (although the house was closer to the station than was the MQ patch). Yet on a later posting, the RAF couldn't provide me with an MQ at my new location and I was allocated a surplus quarter at Boscombe Down, which was 60 miles in the wrong direction from my next station. That gave me the choice of either living in the Mess, more than 210 miles from my wife and young kids, or buying a house.
