The Viscount captain was Jack Gillies a true product of the old school. A great bloke who retired on the 727. Back when you could fly a roster with the same co-pilot Jack was often paired up with Jack Edwards. Sadly both gone. When rostered together on their favourite Darwin overnights, they were fondly referred to as, 'The two Jacks'. Real characters and great company. I learnt a lot from bar stories with them. Jack Gillies was an excellent stick, no nonsense and no bull-**** kind of pilot. I often wonder if faced with a 'MAX problem' how the two Jacks would have handled it. I have a feeling, whilst the CVR would have recorded some colourful language, they would have bought the aeroplane back.
