Having landed just after from Amsterdam, the RVRs for R/W 09 were given as 550/450/450m, so the option of a Cat 1 approach to 09 with the wind at 140/9 was open to the crew.

Obviously they went around for a Cat 2 on 27, touchdown RVR of 450, with a minima of 300m required. Unfortunately, Liverpool were still only Cat 1 on R/W 27 while they changed the runway, I didn't find out exactly what the reason was, and this may have accounted for the decision to go-around and wait for the Cat 2 to become available.

The landing RVRs were 450/550/550 on R/W 27 so the crews all landed.

That is the non emotional fully legal, technical explanation of what happened, and the 737 is Cat 3A equipped, landing RVRs of 200m, and the latest ones Cat 3b equipped with lower minima, but even after years of Cat 3 operations, the adrenalin still does pump just a little.

I felt really sorry for the 2 Emerald airways turboprops, Cat 1 only equipped, holding for us before trying their approaches, I hope they got in!!
