Ski jumps - why do they work?

Sometimes, I really wonder about the grip some so called professionals have on aerodynamics and aviation.

How, in the name of faith do you expect a 10 ton Harrier to jump over 3, sometimes 4 carriers, if there is no ramp before hand??????
