The controllers are copping some flak here because there was no traffic. What about the scenario where there
was a conflicting aircraft on descent into Coffs? As others have said, you've got to be ready for the worst.

Precisely what VFR in Class E is all about. Just go and do your own thing, don't concern yourself with anybody else. They will (probably) keep out of your way.
