I recall a Polish factory ship when I was there - '86-'87 - which was fishing for squid, specifically
loligo, which may well have finished up as calamari in Europe.
She was the
Gryf Pomorski (Pomeranian Griffin), fished with automated lines, and the sides were covered in ink, which the squid presumably discharged as they were being reeled in.
