The answer is given by TC himself in the interview:
" ... we have these A380s on for long-term debt. That's one thing. What can we do with them, sell them? No, we can't ... / ... If we can activate the A380 fleet, which we have to live with, we got no choice ..."
So here they are. Actually it makes sense to re-use the A380s, the loss is smaller than just scrapping them. It was the same with the Concord, the spare parts contract were long term and operating the expensive bird was in effect cheaper than just paying for unused spare parts.
It is a hefty weight on EK, but if they want to stay in business, they have no choice but to use their expensive birds. Later they can try to replace them with efficient twins as fast as possible.
