I witnessed a very similar landing with much the same precision by a Handley Page Herald in Malaysia in 1976. the pilot put it on the ground exactly at the start of the foam path.
Two interesting features:
- While the aircraft was burning off fuel and the airport being prepared for the "emergency" the RMAF convened the BOI and it had its first meeting. The Chairman then joined us in the tower. to observe. On his second last low pass, the Herald pilot asked if the BOI Chairman was in the tower and when I told him "Affirmative" (that's the word we used for "yes" in those days) he asked the Chairman to tell him what to do. Stoic silence from the Chairman!
- When looking at accident summaries to confirm the date I see it has been reported as occurring at Subang, following a diversion from Simpang. Not from my memory; this was the day Tun Razak's body was being ferried from London and the aircraft was diverted to Butterworth to ensure both Subang and Simpang were available if needed for the B707 carrying the body and other aircraft ferrying mourners.
