I used to work in ATC with 'Duff' Cooper, an ex-Lancaster pilot. He told me that towards the end of the war, there was so little Luftwaffe activity in the Channel area it was decided one night that the bomber stream would be able to form up with nav lights on. He said that the sight of all the lights milling around in the dark was so unnerving that they decided to turn them off again!
