A friend who was in the Med last week saw USN hercs flying at 10,000ft atnd 230kts with two large helicopters in tow with a KC-135 also at the same altitude/speed following behind. This was a few days earlier than the above mentioned operation heading westwards across the Med to Rota etc.
If that's the case, then they must have been training for it in the days before.
