Just checked the price for a round trip ticket YVR to LHR. It is $1 plus $700 taxes and fees.
For years the airlines absorbed the various taxes, fees and charges levied by airports, government departments (e.g. immigration, customs) etc. Then the airlines decided enough was enough when those charges got as big as you've just quoted.
