I believe that a great deal of scientific literature of the early 20th century was from Germany (
world leaders in maths, synthetic chemistry and atomic physics as well as other science disciplines). I had heard it was common for English speaking scientists in those fields to learn German to keep abreast of developments in Germany from German published papers. Of course Mr H. pretty much stuffed up that whole unbiased sharing of science concept even before the war.
