I think you’re mixing Sioux City and Gimli there; like I said, Gimli is definitely one up for the human pilot. Helluva deficit to overcome though. On the wider principle, local knowledge isn’t part of the licensing standard for any air transport operation (except for airport-specific qualifications). Can you imagine how hard it would be to learn and retain if it was?! London black cab drivers have to learn every street and every short cut in a few square miles... and their accumulated professional knowledge has been rendered pretty much irrelevant by GPS, traffic monitoring systems and Google Maps.
