It does remind me of the BE/LM bloodbath in Scotland. But what do you expect 'airline management genuis' to do? Sit still and only cherry pick unserved routes? No. Competition is inevitable and they just have to roll with it.
It seems almost inconceivable that any airline chooses to go into competition with another operator given the present financial and economic crisis we find ourselves in at the moment, especially small airlines. Why risk losing a shed load of cash on competing routes when you could operate on other unserved routes with a chance you could make them work with no competition.
