If the damage amounts to more than £5k the maximum sentence is ten years. Less than £5k is up to six months. Perhaps lowering that threshold is the answer?
Or a middle tier of £2k with 3 yrs in jail.
In these circumstances I think their is more benefit to educating those who vandalise war memorials. Give them 500 hrs community service, all of which has to be with veterans organisations and Headley Court....
Most are misguided kids who have little concept of the real world. They live in a bubble that is an echo chamber of tree-hugging and all military personnel being baby killers and violent killers intent on having as high a body count as possible. They have likely never, ever, had a conversation with a veteran.
Sending them to jail 'proves' the system is hell bent on perpetuating the rape, pillaging and baby killing!
Dialogue and understanding is how these problems are fixed.
Just my opinion.
