Basically yes, and I believe it could be done in one ride. (I fly Boeing but never had MEP!!)
Doing the IR SP in Multi gives you SE privileges anyway, although it's only the SE that can be revalidated by experience (with your LPC) - To revalidate the multi IR you'll get credit for the LPC but you'll still need to do the asymmetric elements as part of a reduced test.

If you only want the multi for conversion purposes, you'll need some MEP flying anyway, so you might as well get your IR-SP-ME at the same time. When you apply to the CAA, ask for a separate SEIR. That way, if you let the multi lapse, you can still keep it valid by experience.
