My father Rupert Butler was commissioned in the Royal Air Force on the 5th September 1961 and his logbook contained time on Meteor T7 & F8, Phantom FGR2, Canberra T4, B2 & B15 and the Vulcan. He left in 1979 to continue 25 years flying the Chipmunk and Bulldog mostly at RAF Benson for 6 AEF. He served on Canberras in Tengah between 1962 - 1964 and was a flying instructor on Jet Provosts T3 and T4 on 1 Sqn of 7 FTS for the last 18 months before it closed in 1966.

He ran a small manufacturing business from his farm in East Devon until 2013 before retiring to the local village. He was closely involved in local politics and an active member of the local conservative association.

Rupert suffered a heart attack last Saturday evening whilst enjoying Kristin Scott Thomas performing as Churchills wife Clemmie on television. He is seeing out his last days in hospital in Exeter and if anyone has memories that we can repeat to him, it might get through and amuse him during his final hours.

Many thanks,

Seb Butler
