I read somewhere (either Travel weekly or TTG) that Excel Airways had to bail our their parent company Libra with a £16m loan. Guess they had no choice, because without Libra, no bums on seats. Without bums on seats, no Excel. There is just too much capacity to the Eastern Med, and with Cyprus joining the EU, its bound to get worse, before it gets better.
