The Official NHS masks require a "Fit Test". Basically, they fit one on you, and then put some smelly/tasty stuff near you. If you can either taste or smell the stuff, the mask isn't working.
Don't just dump a mask on your face.
If it was up to me, I would call it the fart test, but the NHS insist on calling it a Fit test.
