Fine droplets between 1-5 micrometres in size – about 30 times smaller than the width of a human hair – can remain airborne for several hours in still air.

I am thinking when someone breathes in unless the mask is a perfect seal with no gaps and can also stop a 1 micrometer particle it isn’t going to save you. I do note though that in some countries it is mandatory to wear one so clearly some countries think differently.

Also with a shortage of PPE equipment the priority must be for health workers.
